Good morning and Happy Monday.
I trust everyone had a restful Thanksgiving Break…even if it was a little different than most years. I suppose for those of you who might dread having to get together with extended family, this year was pretty nice because you had a built-in excuse. Still, I hope this past week was restful and gave you an opportunity to do things you do not normally get to do.
This time of the year is often referred to as the season of Hope. We often toss the word Hope around without much thought: "I hope I get a good parking spot"…"I hope my favorite restaurant is still open"…"I hope I get the present I want for Christmas." But in its true form, the word hope is so much more. It is a deeply rooted, non-circumstantial belief that life will work out just fine…even if we cannot see it right now. What do you place your hope?
Only 14 more school days until the end of the semester. This is the time to really make the big push to improve grades. Teachers may be giving a cut-off date for late or missing work, so do not delay.
Report cards will be coming out in the first week of January. I would strongly advise you to not look at PowerSchool during break. As teachers are entering work through the break, the PowerSchool grade will be fluctuating mightily and will only cause anxiety. So, please consider turning off your notifications during break…there is way more important things to worry about.
Coffee with the Admin will be on Tuesday at 8:00. Please see your email for the link
This Wednesday is designated for 6th period.
All 8th graders will be attending a Virtual Orientation for La Mirada HS on Wednesday (December 2) morning during the 6th period block. We know that not every 8th grader will be attending LMHS (nearly 1/3 of our students live outside the Benton attendance area), but it is still an opportunity for your kids to see what La Mirada has to offer. Normally, the 8th graders would have all headed over to LMHS for an actual tour. But like everything in 2020, we must do things a bit different.
La Mirada HS is hosting a Parent Orientation on Wednesday, December 2 at 6:30 PM via Zoom. The links will be posted on the LMHS website. I would highly encourage you to check it out.
Are you interested in participating in our PTSA for next year? We will have a quick Zoom Association Meeting on December 16th at 6:30pm to elect our nominating committee for the 21-22 PTSA elections. The zoom link will be sent out in the coming weeks.
All teachers are available between 2:00-3:00 each day to help students. This is the most underutilized feature of Distance Learning. Our teachers have "office hours" for students to pop in and receive help. Typically, there may not be more than five students in the office at any one time. There is a good chance your student could receive 1:1 help during this time. So, beyond our regular tutoring, students can also access help by going to a teacher's office hours. Check it out.
Remind your student to please work on their iReady assignments. Our next diagnostic will be held in January and we would love to show you growth.
Here is the prettier version of the school newsletter.
